Did You Know? Facts about Nails.

Facts about Nail Growth and Structure.

Information on how to have beautiful, natural nails.

The primary purpose of the free edge of the nail is to protect the tip of the finger and or toe.

nail anatomy

The nail bed is attached to the bone by ligaments.

The nail root is attached at the base of the nail, under the skin and inside the mantle.

The skin that touches, overlaps and surrounds the nail is the perionychium.

The lunula is the half-moon shape at the base of the nail that appears white due to a reflection of light at the point where the nail matrix and nail bed meet.

Nails are an appendage of the skin.Nail anatomy 2

The cuticle is the loose and pliable overlapping skin around the nail.

The average growth of nails is 1/8th inch per month in adults.

Nails grow slower due to aging, winter months and or poor nutrition and tend to grow the fastest in the summer.

The growth of a new nail plate takes approximately 4 to 6 months.

Nail polish, applied correctly, can give the nail a healthy thicker appearance.

Hand massage with a good lotion will add much needed moisture to the skin and the nails, as well as, increasing circulation, blood flow, stimulation and relaxation to the hands and feet.

Over filing the nail and using too harsh of an abrasive or chemicals can thin and damage the natural nail.  Electric Files are meant to be used only on artificial nails.  Damage from electric files can harm natural nails.

In the salon, there are several quick fixes to get your nails looking great immediately, however, there is nothing better than prevention.  If you treat you natural nails with care, they will grow and be beautiful.  Regular manicures with quality tools, equipment and products is the best routine to get into if you want beautiful, natural nails.

2018 Update – Careers in Beauty-Travel World Wide

Careers in Beauty – Cosmetology, Makeup Artistry, Nail Technician – Travel World Wide – Unlimited Income Potential.

CHI Pro’s working their magic. Hair by Anna.

Rated ONE of the Top 10 Career Choices, Cosmetology is Booming!

Studies show that it is a very stable field that is recession proof and growing at a steady rate.

2018  Update –  Cosmetology Careers from Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy

Why?  You might ask.  Well, do you have hair, skin or nails?  That is the answer.  Everyone at some time or other needs beauty services to help them with their concerns about their own hair, skin and nails.  Also people are in the job market, and need to look great and travel world wide for their own careers.  Did you know that women who wear makeup to work make more money than their own fellow female workers who do not wear cosmetics.  Therefore there is a need for beauty and cosmetics.  This is not purely vanity, it shows that individuals who wear cosmetics, take pride in their appearance, and usually will perform better than someone who is not quite as well put together, and doesn’t care about the small stuff.

According to occupational handbooks-

Cosmetology is expected to grow faster than average, offering work in all capacities from extreme to in-between success.  Overall employment for personal appearance workers is projected to grow because of increasing population, incomes, and demand for beauty services.  Source – NAACAS 2007 Job Demand Survey.

Licensed cosmetologists provide a variety of personal services that help clients to look and feel their best.  Services include hair styling, hair dressing, braiding, upstyles, chemical services such as perms, color, highlights, lowlights, speciality color such as ombre’, sombre’, multidimensional color, texturizing & smoothing services, hair cutting, and barbering services, waxing, facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, speciality facials, tanning, spray tans, makeup artistry, manicures, pedicures and artificial nails.

Personal appearance is not only a key factor in keeping one’s morale high. A well groomed appearance is also a factor in enhancing one’s chances for a successful career!

2016 Proms 601

The primary goal of a successful licensed cosmetologist is to create an experience that the client will enjoy and want to repeat.  Cosmetologists keep pace with the fashion world and stand ready to meet the constantly changing career skills vital to success.

Continuing education is a must! Cosmetology offers opportunities for personal growth and many, many career options!

The demand for Cosmetologists:  In January 2007, there were 1,682,641 professionals employed in the nation’s 370,215 beauty salons, barber shops, skin care salons, and nail salons.  The typical salon is a small full service shop with 5.1 stations, three full-time professionals, and two part time professionals.

Salon owners reported 484,660 job openings that were filled during 2006.  This represents an average of 1.3 openings per salon.  Nearly 40 percent of all new positions were filled by inexperienced workers.  Compare that to college graduates, with a two year or four year degree, who are now seeking jobs outside their field of expertise.

More Facts about Cosmetology

Even with significant levels of hiring, nearly three quarters of the salons that tried to fill positions were not able to find qualified applicants.  The supply of skilled professionals in the beauty industry continues to fall short of the demand.  This is a chronic shortage that has been reported in earlier surveys of the cosmetology industry.

Hair stylists are needed in every town and city in the country.

travel world wide

Of the various specialties, the increasing demand for nail technicians appears to be most substantial.  While nail tech’s currently make up only 9.7% of the current industry employees, nearly 18 percent of the job openings are in that area.

Nail Technician
Careers in Beauty

56 percent of salon employees work full time, 31 percent are part time (20-35 hours), and 13 percent are low time (less than 20 hours).

The average salary, NOT including tips, is about $30,000 to $ 48,000 per year.

Careers in Beauty

These findings support the unmet needs of the industry along with several possible ways you can enter this profession.  Employment opportunities far outweigh the risks of a career transition.

A Look Into YOUR Future!

1.  Constant Demand.  The need for hair stylists, manicurists, and estheticians is not likely to diminish.

2.  Growth of Spas.  They once were the exclusive retreats for the rich and famous; however, more and more consumers are now embracing the spa lifestyle.  For aspiring or current beauty professionals, this means that job opportunities will grow rapidly, especially due to the growth in full-service day spas, and medi-spas.

3.  Greening of Beauty.  The current “green” movement goes far beyond fluorescent light bulbs and recycling.  It’s also translating into a solid career choice.  Interest in sustainable beauty and fashion equates to a greater demand for highly skilled and licensed beauty professionals who are trained in natural or alternative treatments such as aromatherapy, body wraps, salt and sugar glows, reflexology, and more.

4.  Ultra-Luxury is Alive.  Cosmetology is a business that caters to the wealthy including movie stars, CEOs, philanthropists, oil magnates, and others.  The ultra-rich consumer easily weathers any recession and continues to spend lavishly on beauty, health, and wellness.

5.  Multi-Faceted Career.  Many cosmetologists are skilled in not just hair styling, coloring, and cutting, but also manicures, pedicures, facial treatments, make-up analysis, and much much more.  This means you have room to branch out and explore other fields, and that income comes not from a single source but highly diverse avenues ensuring a safety net for salon owners as well as workers.

100_5457

6.  Baby Boomer Clientele.  In a society that  values youth and beauty, aging baby boomers- a group of 78 million Americans, are willing to spend money to get closer to the fountain of youth.

7.  International Opportunities.  Even when the economy is doing poorly in the U.S., other countries may be doing well.  With global hospitality companies opening up branches overseas, there are employment opportunities in spas,  hotels, and other outlets which offer a chance for travel.

8.  Governmental Posts.  Some of the most stable jobs are int the federal government where layoffs and firings are less than in the private sector.  If your salon is located near a military or airbase, government contracting firm, or other government-linked facility, there will be plenty of personnel wanting personal care services.

9.  Stress Reducer.  Stress is the tipping point that leads to sleep disorders, poor eating and for some- hypertension.  Regular spa visits can help treat health concerns and act as a preventative measure as well.

10.  Occupational Outlook.  The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that job opportunities for estheticians will grow rapidly through 2016.  This means that salon professionals will enjoy job security for many years to come.

Career Choices-   Wow! There are so many!

2015 may 148

There are numerous opportunities in the job market for cosmetologists.  The trick to being a happy professional is finding the right fit for yourself with your career choice and your work setting.  Only you can analyze yourself,  deep down, and figure out what environment you need to work in to be happy.  There are several choices.  First and foremost decide what type of people do you want to work with.  Then decide what type of services you prefer performing, and then what type of people you want in your target market.  When you get the right mix, work does not seem like work and your days will go fast and you will be much happier in your workplace.

Winter Weather and Beauty Tips

Burrrrr…..It’s Really Cold Outside!

Wow, it’s really cold here in P.V. today.  I guess winter has arrived.  How would you like some tips on Winterizing you hair, skin and nails?

We are a full service CHI Partner School, so we offer a wide range of services such as scalp treatments, nail treatments and facials. In the following video you will see one of the basic procedures for a spa conditioning services using CHI Tea Tree Products. We also carry the new CHI Rose Hip Oil Products as well as many others.

Deep moisturize for hair is most important when the winds are blowing and the heat is on in our homes and businesses.  To properly deep condition it is very important to cleanse the hair first to prep the hair and remove any residue from previous hair products such as waxes, gels and hairsprays.  After cleansing, rinse and towel dry hair to remove any excess water, then add a deep moisturizer such as Aquage healing conditioner, comb through, bag and leave on for 1-3 minutes, rinse, towel dry and proceed with your styling techniques.

Ok, so Now for the Nails.  Are your nails dry, cracking, or peeling?  Are your hands parched from the Winter winds, and the indoor heat?  The best thing for this type of problem is a spa manicure.  We start by cleansing the hands with a sugar scrub, follow with a hand massage with a deep moisturizing lotion and then dip in a warm mixture of skin conditioning oils and paraffin, your hands are then wrapped in mitts and allowed to deep treat the skin of your hands and the nail plates to soothe your winter woe’s.  Once the conditioning is complete we finish the manicure with cuticle care, nail care, and then we apply the polish of your choice.  Your hands will feel wonderful and your nails will look great! We now offer the full line of Cuccio Nail Colors – Check out these beautiful shades!

Skin care at it’s finest.  The European Facial.

Does you skin need an extra boost?  Winter is tough on our faces, and we all know we need to put our best face forward.  facial machine

The European Facial can be a combination of many different types of treatments using a multi-function machine to help with deep exfoliation, steaming, deep pore cleansing, micro-dermabrasion, vacuuming the skin, massage and even galvanic and light therapy such as  u.v. treatments to help the skin heal from the harsh effects of the weather.

What about at home skincare?  It is always important to cleanse and moisturize your skin daily, especially when the weather is so harsh.  facial home

Just like the hair it is very important to cleanse the skin first, then immediately apply your moisturizer. This will seal in the moisture and help to better hydrate your skin.  Scrubs are great to do at home about once a week, but if you overstimulate the skin too often you could possibly increase the chance of an acne flare up is you are acne prone.

2015 Spring is Here!

Forgot to Winterize Your Skin?

Snow, Ice, Wind, Rain, Slush….it really seemed like we got it all this Winter.  Cold outside and dry heat inside is the perfect mix to dry out our skin, hair and nails.

So, what can we do to get ourselves back into a healthy hydrated look again?  Hydrate with lots of water both internally as well as externally, and then moisturize to seal in that wonderful hydration.

If you skin has become rough, dry and parched looking, then you probably need to add a little exfoliation to the mix.

facial dry

We can help with a micro-dermabrasion treatment to slough away that dead, dry tissue and let you new skin come to the surface.  Ask us about the wide variety of facial services we have to suit your particular needs.  We have a wonderful European Facial  Machine that can do treatments specialized to your individualized needs.

Have you noticed your nails chipping, cracking and splitting?  Well, this is another sign of the harsh winter effects the weather has on us.

With a professional paraffin manicure we can get your nails back on the road to recovery.  If the nails are not healthy and hydrated they will not hold polish as well.

mani hands

We start the manicure with a shaping, sugar scrub, and then a wonderful massage followed with a dip in a warmed paraffin mixture that is packed with nutrients and oils to re-hydrate those thirsty nails.  After the oils are soaked in we follow with the polish of your choice.

You don’t have to have artificial nails to have healthy looking nails.  With the proper care and a little at home maintenance you nails can be looking great in a very short time.

Sometimes that special affair requires an instant solution.

If you don’t have time to wait for your nails to grow out and recover from the winter blues, we can help you with a quick fix, such as nail wraps, or even artificial nails to give you the instant lift and length you need.  We are here for you.  Talk to us and we can help you find a solution to your beauty issues.

Now For The Hair.

Flat, life less hair, dry and brittle from the inside heat and the outside cold, can do wonders with a deep moisturizing treatment with a little added shine or gloss.  Just one treatment and your hair will immediately look and feel better.  Shiny hair with a soft touch is always attractive.

flat iron

What about the Tools You Use at Home?

If you use Hot Tools, such as curling irons, blow dryers and flat irons, then it is highly recommended that you use a thermal protection spray.  With all of the new hot tools, some get as hot as 450 degrees – Your hair will suffer from dryness, and possibly breakage if not protected from this severe heat.  Ask about our full line of CHI Products to help you with your conditioning needs.

chi12

Do I Have to Cut if All OFF if it is damaged?  NO!

We love long hair and we are here to help you.  If you don’t want to cut your hair that is fine.  Regular trims are recommended to help keep your locks in shape, but a trim is a trim…Your stylist should not be taking too much off.  If you only want 1/16th of an inch off, then that is what should only be removed.  If you want only a split end trim, we can help with that.

How Do I Select the Right Products?

chi15

It is more important to select the right shampoo and conditioner, so you don’t over strip your hairs natural pH balance- and then get into a regular maintenance routine to keep your locks in check.

quick curl 8

With all of the new hair cosmetics on the market, we can cover and correct a lot of issues, but it is very important, as a client, that you don’t complicate those issues with so called “home remedies”, that could cause more damage to that beautiful hair of yours.

Natural Nail Care & At Home Care for the Nails

How do the nails grow?   How can I make my nails stronger?  Do artificial Nails hurt your natural nails?  Can nail polish help my nails grow faster?

These are all valid questions for your nail care expert.

Where do we begin???

nail anatomy

First let’s start with the anatomy of the Nail.  Boring, but needed to understand how the nail grows and how to keep the nail healthy.

The above diagram show the different parts of the nail.

Growth of the nail begins in the Matrix of the nail, this is under the skin below the base of the nail.  Nail Growth is greatly dependent on the health and nourishment of the body.  If you nourish your body with the right foods, and enough water, and fresh air, your body should be healthy and this will reflect in your hair, skin and nails.

Nails grow at an average rate of 1/8th inch per month.  Nails grow more rapidly in younger people, thus as one ages the nail growth slows down. Under normal circumstances, growth of a new nail plate takes about four to six months.  The nail bed on which the nail body (plate) rests contains many nerves, as well as blood vessels for continuous nourishment.

As the nail is formed under the skin, in the matrix of the nail, you need to be extra careful when you push back your cuticles, and do not apply so much pressure, which could cause you to “dent” the newly formed nail, which could lead to a distortions in the nail, and possibly cause a furrow in the new nail.

Nail Healthy

When filing the nail, file from outside to center with a fine grit file.  This will shape the nail without shredding or tearing it.  Friction can be reduced with the use of an nail oil and the use of a hand lotion will help the massage feel great and moisturize the tissue of the skin as well as the nails.

Cuticle solvent will help break down excess cuticle tissue, where as a cuticle oil will help lubricate the cuticle where it can be pushed back easier. You can decide if your cuticle is excessive or dry and what route you need to take.

How can I make my nails stronger and healthier?

A professional manicure is recommended.  When you go to a professional they should do a hand and nail analysis, and then determine what services would benefit you and your nails.  In a professional salon, there should be a variety of services to choose from.  You can start with a very simple water manicure, which will include basic nail care to give you a jump start to healthier nails.  You can do a very basic water manicure at home, but it always feels better when you have it done at a salon.

mani soak

Can Artificial Nails Hurt My Natural Nails?

Yes.  If not done properly artificial nails can damage natural nails.

There are seven layers to a healthy nail bed.  If the technician gets carried away and files through those layers the natural nail bed will be left too thin.

bs5

If the technician does not keep their tools clean and sanitized, you, the client are at risk for infection from virus, bacteria or even fungus.  It is very important to make sure the salon you frequent practices the highest levels of safety and sanitation.

mani tools

MMA Alert – Methyl Methacrylate Monomer is outlawed for use in the Salon.  It is a poisonous substance that should not be used in acrylic monomers.  This substance is still used in some salons, even though it is illegal.

If I have Artificial nails put on How often do I need to go back to the salon.

At least every two weeks.  If you are a nail bitter, you may need to go in sooner.

Will Nail Polish help my Natural Nails?

Yes, it can if it is a high quality polish.  Some nail polish will have strengtheners and fortifiers in them to help give your natural nails a little more support.

Does Polish make my nails grow faster?  No, but it can help protect the nail, by giving it a little extra thickness.

mani pedi color

What is the best way to protect my Natural Nails?

Protect your natural nails by treating them like jewels not tools.  This means to value them, protect them with the use of rubber gloves, when doing household chores.  Keep them clean, and moisturized.  File out any rough edges to protect the nails from snags and tears.  When you exercise proper care on a regular basis, upkeep is at a minimum.

Hope you find this information interesting and helpful.  If you have any questions pertaining to the Services We Offer at the Academy, you can give me a call at 405-238-3426.  We are always happy to help you with all of your beauty needs.

See you soon at the Academy!

Nail Polish – How do I choose what to use???

Daily Wear – Long Wearing – Extended Wear…….

In today’s market place, there are endless options on almost everything, including nail polish.  I recently attended a trade show, and again they had the latest and greatest new item…..a long wearing weekly polish. What’s so new about this, I thought this was the goal from the beginning.

mani polish

Polish, polish what do I choose?

Daily wear, weekly wear or extended wear?  What is the difference and which should I choose?

1. Daily Wear.opi_nail

Daily wear nail polish is widely available to the public at salons, local stores, such as discount stores, drugstores, dress shops and even catalog stores such as Avon, Beauticontrol, & Victoria Secrets.  Daily wear is used at home for easy application and removal with either a non-acetone, or an acetone based polish remover.  Daily wear polish is very economical and can be found as low as $ 1.00 per bottle, and upwards depending on the degree of nail conditioners and additives added to the formulation.  Additives can range from ridgefillers, proteins, diamond dust, ceramic flecks, nylon fibers, silk, aromatherapy, and the list goes on and on.  The sky is the limit on additives and prices depending on the degree of benefit derived from the ingredients.

Generally speaking the use of a base coat, prior to the polish application and a top coat after the color coat will help the polish to last longer.

Hint: Always seal the free edge of the nail with your polish coats, this will help your polish to wear better. Keep polish off of the cuticle area and the nail walls, this will help with lifting & chipping . (see diagram on parts of the nail)

Easy on and easy off, with little damage to the nail plate, with regular removal practices. Great for home use.

2.  Weekly Wear or Extended Wear Polish.

Extended wear is just that, it is meant to be worn for a longer period of time without chipping and cracking.  This polish has a few more additives in it to extend the wear of the polish.  It is still meant to be removed easily at home with little or no damage to the nail plate.   However, read directions carefully to see if there are any special application methods needed for this type of polish.

3. UV Cured Polish. Gel Nails. Durable Wear.

Extra Long Wearing.  UV Cured Polish requires a special light to cure the nail polish.  These nail polishes usually last on the nail, if properly applied for two to three weeks.  These nails are actually  in the artificial nail category as soft gels. They are meant to be long-lasting, durable, no peeling, no chipping and no dulling color.  There are two different types on Gel Nails, soft gel and hard gels.  Soft gels can usually be soaked off with a solvent such as acetone, but Hard Gels usually have to be buffed or filed off.

Extreme caution must be used during the removal practice, due to the damage that can occur with either the nail product solvent, or the mechanical damage that can occur with excessive filing or buffing.  This type of Nail Polish application is recommended to be done in the salon by a professional that knows how to both apply and remove the product safely.

Speciality Products.  essienailsglitter

There has been a flood of fun new nail polishes that have hit the market in the past few years.  The days of 5 shades of Red are over and now there is a very wide range on polish and products that can range from matte to super shiny, heavy glitter to diamond dust, to glow in the dark, even products with mylar filaments, sand texture and dried flower petals,  and the list is endless.

With all of these new texture products make sure you can remove them safely without damage to the nail plate, free edge or cuticle.  If you damage your natural nail you may see permanent damage later that you cannot correct.  nail anatomy 3
