Ask a Stylist- Frizz Free Curls

Curls are Divine, but Frizz is Not Fabulous.

Curly Curls, Natural Curls, Curls for Girls, Beachy Waves, Volume Curls, Spiral Curls, Rope Perms, Wand Curls, Flat Iron Curls….the list goes on and on.

So, what is the key to having beautiful curls with out the frizz?    Do you want no frizz hair?  Then you need -Proper Home Maintenance. It goes way beyond a simple shampoo and conditioner. When the heat rises, and the humidity is off the scale, you can almost guarantee that you will have a Bad Hair Day. If you don’t select your products wisely your hair could be a disaster.

With so many products and tools out there, how can you decide what is perfect for you?

Ask your stylist!  Yes, I said ask your stylist.  Beautiful hair is our job.  Stylists who are serious about their career are willing to stay up to date with the most current products, trends, ingredients and regimes to help your hair look its best at all times.

Hair is fiber.  It behaves like fiber, some hair is soft and silky, and other hair may be rough and coarse.  That doesn’t mean one is better than the other, it simply means different hair types will perform differently. For example, when you want your soft hair to hold curl, you have to starch or stiffen it, but if you stiffen it too much it becomes stiff and crunchy, no one wants stiff, crunchy hair.  This is where pliant strength comes in. The trick is to get the fiber to perform the way you want it to.

Pliant strength is a gage on how easily the hair can bend; how flexible supple and adaptable the hair is.

How much conditioner is needed?  If you are using a quality product, you only need a small amount.  After you shampoo and rinse well, towel blot the hair to get the excess water out, then add the conditioner, comb through and leave on 3-5 minutes, it takes that long for the cuticle of the hair shaft to close down again, and this will help to keep the frizz down.  There is no such thing as an instant conditioner.  Rinse out, and then apply your styling product, comb through and style as desired.

Product cocktailing is an excellent way to build your pliant strength without overdoing it.  Selecting the right cocktail for your hair type will make your hair smooth, bouncy and frizz free.

Selection of Professional Hair Care Products

With so many products out there in the market place today, it is really hard to keep up with all of them. It is so very important to keep the hair in the best condition possible, especially with all of the new fun color trends, that can really take a toll on the condition of the hair.  I, as a professional stylist, personally recommend working with one product line at a time until you know all of the ups and downs of the line, the ingredients, how they perform and what type of product works best with the specific hair type.

To Curl or Not to Curl….Are “Perms” back???

Texture Services for 2012.

Clients are constantly asking me what’s in and what’s out in the hair industry.  Ease in styling the hair is the main thing.  If we, hair dressers, could make your life a little easier why not do it?  This is where texturizing services come in.

Do you have flat hair that won’t hold curl? Do you want bouncy, full hair?  Do you want curls that stay in all day?  Well then a volumizing, texture service may be the answer for you.  The days of the old standard perm is out.  Beach waves are in!  The new texture services offer a more organic, modern curl pattern that is not so “set” and “structured”, it moves, it flows, and it feels soft and silky. The chemicals are more gentle on the hair often infusing keratin protein into the hair, therefore, making the hair stronger and healthier after the service, helping the hair to style easier and faster.

What about hair that is already curly, wavy, or frizzy?

Can anything be done to help eliminate the frizz?  YES!  A smoothing service may be right for you.   Texture doesn’t have to be curl, or waves, it can be straight and less frizzy.  Technology has come a long way in the last few years and now you can straighten the hair completely with chemicals, or just reduce the amount of frizz, and keep your waves or curls.  Again these products are infusing protein into the hair therefore reducing the frizz and helps to block out extra humidity that often causes the frizz to happen.  Don’t confuse these products with the Keratin Blowouts that contain formaldehyde & have recently been pulled off the market by the FDA for possible health hazards.  These new chemicals are completely safe if done in a professional salon that has been trained in all of the safety precautions that are associated with any of these chemicals.

We are at an advantage, this day and time, with a wide variety of chemists who are constantly looking for new chemicals that can make our jobs easier, our hair stronger, healthier, and easier to care for, the days of one shampoo, one style gel and one hairspray are over. We now have endless options as far as hair care products, chemicals, and at home maintenance items to help may our styling easier.  Professional Salons should carry a selection of different products to help custom blend the proper regime for you at home.  Don’t hesitate to ask your hair care provide for his or her recommendations.

We have come a long way baby!
