Why did I Choose Beauty School?

Why Did I Choose Beauty School?

Because I Love People.

I Love the expression I see on a person’s face when I finish their style, turn them to the mirror and see their eye’s glow in a way we haven’t seen in years.  The look you get when you help someone’s day get just a little better.  You don’t have to move mountains to make someones day better.  Sometimes just the little things.  The subtle changes.  A little caring.  What we feel is minor, others see as MAJOR.  What a great thing to do……Make someones day better!

THIS IS WHAT WE DO IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY!

Penny Miller – Owner and Educator of P.M.C.A. Let me help you with your Beauty Education.

Why Should YOU Choose Beauty School?

There are so many reasons to choose the beauty industry as a rewarding career!

You may have a job already so you probably know what it’s like to work and get paid. But what will it be like to have a career and work at it year after year? Will you come home after a hard day and complain to anyone who will listen? That’s not what anyone wants out of life. Think positive. Come up with some words you’d like to connect with your profession. Now look at the words associated with beauty professionals. See whether your words match these.

  • Beauty. Sure, that’s obvious, but being around beautiful things like nature and art really can enhance your life and make it easy to get up in the morning!
  • Happiness. Not too long ago a poll asked people of different professions to rate their general happiness. Guess what landed among the top? Hairdressers! Walk into any salon, and you’ll see a lot of smiling people.
  • Creativity. Having the chance to express themselves creatively is one of the top reasons people give for making beauty their life’s work. You get to work with your hands and come up with new ideas all the time. Every face becomes a fresh canvas for the make-up artist every head of hair a sculpting project for the hair designer.
  • People. Unlike some of the other arts-writing, painting-in hair styling and makeup application you don’t spend your creative time alone. In fact, beauty is about as opposite of a solitary career as you’ll find. And, of course, when you work on people’s hair and make-up you hear more of their secrets than you want to know!
  • Reward/Fulfillment. Ask hairstylists what they enjoy most about their day-to-day work, and you’re likely to get one response more than any other: it’s an absolute delight to make people feel great about themselves. Taking a client who’s looking, well, not her best, and seeing her face when she stares at the mirror after you’ve finished working your magic is incredibly gratifying! And unlike a lot of efforts that you work on a long time before you see the “fruits of your labor,” in beauty the gratification comes immediately.
  • Passion. That’s a word you’ll hear a lot from people who work in this field. They feel passionate about beauty, and they so appreciate that they can make a living from their passion.
  • Flexibility. You manage your own schedule. This is another thing professionals love about this business. People get their hair done on weekends, at night, early before work-whatever hours you want to work, there are clients who need you. It’s common for people to work part-time some years and full-time other years, depending on life’s twists and turns.
  • Personal Growth. Fashion trends change continually, and new techniques are routinely developed to create the new looks. To stay on top of everything, beauty professionals go to classes, read magazines, watch DVDs-anything that keeps them up on the latest/newest/hottest. When you’re learning, you feel connected and healthy. One hairdresser said, “When you’re green, you’re growing; when you’re ripe, you rot!”
  • CHI Educator Training
  • Opportunity. Once you’re a licensed cosmetologist  you have an open door to a world of opportunities. You can become a salon manager or owner, teach at a cosmetology school, work for a company to help formulate products, demonstrate products and techniques at trade shows (it’s called “platform work”), develop new looks called “trend releases” for product lines, create styles for magazine or newspaper photo shoots, work on the sets of movies and TV, or even branch off into fields connected to beauty and salons such as public relations/advertising, beauty magazine writing, retail merchandising and display, product sales and distribution and interior design. If you want to stay hands-on “behind the chair,” you can specialize-do mostly hair cuts, hair color, facials, nails or make-up, for example-or you can do it all.
  • Job Security. For decades now, there’s been a shortage of skilled, licensed salon professionals, so the industry has had virtually a 0% unemployment rate. It’s likely that you’ll never have to worry about being able to find a job, and even salons that are fully staffed are interested to talk to eager-to-learn young people coming into the field.
  • Financial Security. The average income for cosmetologist is about $32,000 per year, according to the American Association of Cosmetology Schools, with some sources estimating that figure at closer to $50,000. Many busy beauty professionals who work full-time earn more than that-into the high five figures and beyond. Not everyone does, and it may not happen right away, but if you do good work, have the people skills to get clients trying higher-end services like hair color and waxing, periodically raise your prices and continually market yourself to spread the word, you will make an excellent living as a beauty professional.
  • Giving & Caring. In addition to being “givers” when it comes to treating clients well, cosmetologists are known for their good deeds and community service. Salons routinely hold fundraising cut-a-thons, participate in charity walks as a team and volunteer to do the hair backstage for fashion shows that benefit all sorts of charities-children’s needs, cancer, AIDS, victims of hurricanes and other disasters, hunger and pretty much any cause that’s out there. It’s a charitable industry filled with generous people.
  • Fun. A lot of salon owners make sure the environment stays light and upbeat. They hold sales contests with prizes, decorate for holidays throughout the year, hold photo shoots and laugh a lot.
  • Teamwork. The day of the competitive, catty hairstylist is over! Today’s salons are all about building a team of professionals who help each other and play to everyone’s strengths. Older stylists help and mentor new people, and the whole staff pitches in if someone needs to take time away for illness or other personal crisis. A well-run salon becomes a second family-in a good way!

What is it like being a student at Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy?

images (42)

Well, we start at 8:00 a.m. with Theory Class.  This class is usually around one hour.  This is where the textbook learning starts….We may have lecture, a how to demo, watch video, or have a power point presentation, explaining the fundamentals of Cosmetology education and it’s application in the Beauty Industry.

IMG_0839[1]We have a relaxed atmosphere where students participate in active learning, we welcome open discussion about all of the topics we teach.  This helps the students get a better understanding of how to apply the basic theory to salon life.

Hair Chemist

What do students learn in Theory?

The Basics first, such as general sanitation and infection control, rules and regulations needed in a Beauty Establishment. Master Instructor, Penny Miller, helps the students to perfect Customer Service, Ethics, Basic Procedures for hair styling, hair shaping or cutting, texture services, perming, coloring, blonding procedures, finger waving and pin curls, roller sets, blow out services, foiling, braiding, manicure and pedicure services, facial services, waxing, massage and cosmetic application.images (35)

The Salon world revolves around the client, and students need to understand this in order to be a success in their career.

This is just the beginning of their journey.

FUN – FUN – FUN!

So what’s next?  PRACTICE – PRACTICE – PRACTICE.

Students practice daily on the mannequins to get the hang of hair styling procedures and after they test out on all of the above basics, then they can start working on the public.

Is it safe for the customers to have students work on them?

YES!  ALL WORK IS SUPERVISED BY MASTER INSTRUCTORS WHO WORK CLOSELY WITH ALL OF THE STUDENTS.

2013 Aug 237

A lot of our customers state that they feel like they get closer attention at the school then at some salons. The instructors check all work prior to the student finishing to make sure the client is happy and satisfied.

Do students get to learn modern techniques?

YES! YES! YES!!!

We are a CHI Partnered School,

so students get to see the latest and greatest runway looks, and fun, crazy things that are going on in fashion and at hair shows.  We practice some of these techniques, and explain how the look has evolved from something in the past.

Believe it or not history repeats itself….and some of the styles we see as new and hot now,  were here a long, long time ago.

images (15) So if students get the proper education in basic techniques they can compete on the runways of tomorrow!

What about Products…

There are so many, how do you choose what to use?   This is again where education comes in.  Basic products, do basic things, with proper education and product knowledge, students learn about a wide variety of products, how they work, and what is best for a particular type or style of hair.  Farouk CHI

This separates pros from amateurs, and we all know the right product works wonders.

Tools and Techniques- why is that important?

Training in the technology of different tools used in hair styling and other beauty services will help the student to work smarter not harder.  This is a key to longevity in the business.  Have you ever wondered why when you leave the salon, your hair style will last and last, and when you do it at home it never looks the same?  Well it all comes down to education, the right selection of product, the correct pattern when the hair is blow out, and the proper tool to set the style, your client will look fabulous and you will feel wonderful for achieving the perfect look for your  client.

WHAT A GREAT FEELING!  WHAT COULD BE BETTER?

What do our students say about Cosmetology School?

Here are a few of their comments:

“I like cosmo school because it allows me to be creative and learn the new trends in hair and beauty.  It’s also fun and exciting to learn cool color techniques like foiling and balayage.  My fellow students are also very nice and it’s exciting to learn with others who have interests in cosmetology.”   #I<3vino

“I love having the opportunity to help someone make their appearance better than it is.  I want to be able to see on my client’s face that they love what I did & that it helped boost their self confidence.” Morgan S.

“I love Cosmo school because I’ve wanted to learn to do hair ever since I was little, I grew up in my grannies shop watching and helping her.  Now that I’m actually getting to be in this school and begin my future career, my favorite thing so far is coloring hair, and doing hair cuts.  I love learning new coloring techniques and actually getting to do them on the public.  This school allows me to do what I love, and make people look beautiful, and I Love that.” Chade

“We are getting a top notch education.  We have great textbooks and tons of instructional videos.  Many product educators from CHI, Joico, Backscratchers, etc have visited and taught us about their products.  We have lots of great clients that request anything from flat tops to perms.  We are getting tons of hands on experience.  Penny works with us on our schedule.  I have two children and Penny has always been very understanding”  J.C.

Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy Partners with Leaders in the Beauty Industry

Congratulations to Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy on it’s 10 Year Anniversary!

IMG_0834[1]

Penny Miller started her cosmetology career in 1982, here in the state of Oklahoma.  After a few years in the business she purchased Phase II Hair Design, and slowly converted a Barber Shop into a Cosmetology Salon. During her career, Penny has trained with several product companies such as Matrix, Redken, Paul Mitchell, Sebastian, Roffler, American Crew, Montage, Aquage, Scruples, TiGi, Sexy Hair Concepts, OPI, Tammy Taylor, & Joico, just to name a few. Constantly going to hair shows and educational events she furthered her knowledge in the Cosmetology Industry, brought this information back to the salon and helped to educate her staff on new methods and practices relating to cosmetology.

Later Penny went back to school again to achieve her Master Cosmetology Instructor License, and then in January of 2003, she opened her school, Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy, where she has partnered with several product companies such as CHI, to give her students the advantage of working with strong American Educators and American based products.

Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy, located in beautiful downtown Pauls Valley, Oklahoma is a small beauty college offering a full range of education in Cosmetology, Nail Technology, Esthetics, and even Instructor Courses.  Small classes mean that each student gets a lot of one on one time with the instructor, and their education is individualized for their own particular needs. Everyone learns differently, and when you customize the teaching methods you get a better result with helping each student achieve their goals.  Modeled after the apprentice programs, popular in Europe, the Academy offers a real salon environment for students to learn in and real hands on experience with one on one with clients on the clinic floor. P.M.C.A. currently holds a 100% pass rate at the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology.  All courses are offered at the Academy giving the students a wider range of career opportunities for employment in the future.  Part-time and full-time courses are available with flexible payment plans.

Guest artists are invited in to help students learn about a variety of product lines, so their education is not limited to one school of thought.  Since opening in 2003, Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy has invited in several product educators, such as RX Systems, BackScratchers, Spa Girl, Lorea’l, CHI, Joico,  OPI, Tammy Taylor Systems, Matrix, Aquage, Wella-Sebastian.  We have had special events such as Glamour Photography, Computer Imaging, Nail Classes, Little Princess Parties, Photo Sessions, just to name a few.  Our students have had the opportunity to participate in the hair and make up on a movie production, and have worked  Bridal Fairs, and Fashion Shows & Wedding Parties.  Our students have attended hair shows, special business seminars, field trips to product manufacturing plants, salons, & suppliers and have enjoyed additional information from guest speakers pertaining to salon management and career advancement & financial planning.

A day in the life of a student.  The class day starts at 8:00 a.m. in Theory Class. Students learn textbook information, procedures, state law, safety and sanitation.  This is where students get basic information. Lecture, demonstrations, video presentations, lab equipment, computers and other educational aids assist in the learning process.  After Theory Class, students go to the clinic floor to apply their newly acquired knowledge with a hands on approach.  They are all given mannequins and tools and supplies, and then they start to work applying their new skills, practice, practice, practice, is the motto during this session in the learning process.  After students have reached a level of expertise, they begin working with clients. Clients add a more personal touch to the educational experience because it is very important for each student to learn the necessary people skills to work successfully in a salon.  All work is closely monitored by the instructor, and all services are checked for accuracy. At each level of training, the bar is raised and we expect more out of our students.  By the time they finish the course, they will easily pass Oklahoma State Board Testing, but more important, they will be ready to start their new career in an upscale salon.

What types of careers could a cosmetology graduate expect to find?  Well, here in the state of Oklahoma, the possibilities are really limitless.  Today’s graduate can start in a salon as a beginning hairstylist, and work their way up to master hairstylist working behind the chair doing a wide variety of services from cuts, styles, waxing, facials, manicures, pedicures, massage, cosmetic application, color application, perming and texturizing services, highlighting, etc.  Cosmetology professionals are also need in MediSpa’s for client care pre-op and post-op.  They can go to work for product manufacturers doing demo’s and educational events.  They can assist master stylist’s, learning more about the business, work as a stylist on a cruise ship, or a resort. They can work doing glamour services, cosmetic application, and even hair & makeup on a movie set.  Later, they can even work their way up to salon management or even ownership.  Beauty professionals can go into writing, and even into education. Really in today’s market the possibilities are endless.  All they really need is a “Can Do” attitude. We are in a zero unemployment field that needs more stylists and technicians each year. There is a real shortage of hairstylists out there and we have salons call us regularly looking for new talent. With all the new products, techniques, and services out there now this is a very exciting field to get into.  I have worked in this field for almost 30 years now and it never gets boring!

What type of person is a good fit for a cosmetology career? Anyone who truly cares about people!  If you like people and helping them with their beauty needs, there is no career that can be more personally rewarding!  Young or old, male or female, clients are always in need of Beauty Professionals. There is nothing better than making someone feel special! The look on their face when they see the new look you gave them is priceless. You can boost someone’s self-esteem, help them to look and feel better, and give them that little bit of self-confidence to get them through some of life’s little challenges. What better way to make a living! And YOU can create your own payscale….Yes, the sky is the limit, the more you work, the more you earn, it’s really a Win, Win situation.

If you know of a friend or relative that has thought about a career in the field of Cosmetology, We would love to meet them and help them with their educational needs to get them on the right path in this field. We love making a difference in our students lives, and cultivating new talent. This is a wonderful career that can be very lucrative, personally, professionally, and financially.  Help us to help others on their new paths. You don’t have to go out of town for a great education. Please check out Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy.
