Natural Nail Care & At Home Care for the Nails

How do the nails grow?   How can I make my nails stronger?  Do artificial Nails hurt your natural nails?  Can nail polish help my nails grow faster?

These are all valid questions for your nail care expert.

Where do we begin???

nail anatomy

First let's start with the anatomy of the Nail.  Boring, but needed to understand how the nail grows and how to keep the nail healthy.

The above diagram show the different parts of the nail.

Growth of the nail begins in the Matrix of the nail, this is under the skin below the base of the nail.  Nail Growth is greatly dependent on the health and nourishment of the body.  If you nourish your body with the right foods, and enough water, and fresh air, your body should be healthy and this will reflect in your hair, skin and nails.

Nails grow at an average rate of 1/8th inch per month.  Nails grow more rapidly in younger people, thus as one ages the nail growth slows down. Under normal circumstances, growth of a new nail plate takes about four to six months.  The nail bed on which the nail body (plate) rests contains many nerves, as well as blood vessels for continuous nourishment.

As the nail is formed under the skin, in the matrix of the nail, you need to be extra careful when you push back your cuticles, and do not apply so much pressure, which could cause you to "dent" the newly formed nail, which could lead to a distortions in the nail, and possibly cause a furrow in the new nail.

Nail Healthy

When filing the nail, file from outside to center with a fine grit file.  This will shape the nail without shredding or tearing it.  Friction can be reduced with the use of an nail oil and the use of a hand lotion will help the massage feel great and moisturize the tissue of the skin as well as the nails.

Cuticle solvent will help break down excess cuticle tissue, where as a cuticle oil will help lubricate the cuticle where it can be pushed back easier. You can decide if your cuticle is excessive or dry and what route you need to take.

How can I make my nails stronger and healthier?

A professional manicure is recommended.  When you go to a professional they should do a hand and nail analysis, and then determine what services would benefit you and your nails.  In a professional salon, there should be a variety of services to choose from.  You can start with a very simple water manicure, which will include basic nail care to give you a jump start to healthier nails.  You can do a very basic water manicure at home, but it always feels better when you have it done at a salon.

Can Artificial Nails Hurt My Natural Nails?

Yes.  If not done properly artificial nails can damage natural nails.

There are seven layers to a healthy nail bed.  If the technician gets carried away and files through those layers the natural nail bed will be left too thin.

If the technician does not keep their tools clean and sanitized, you, the client are at risk for infection from virus, bacteria or even fungus.  It is very important to make sure the salon you frequent practices the highest levels of safety and sanitation.

mani tools

MMA Alert - Methyl Methacrylate Monomer is outlawed for use in the Salon.  It is a poisonous substance that should not be used in acrylic monomers.  This substance is still used in some salons, even though it is illegal.

If I have Artificial nails put on How often do I need to go back to the salon.

At least every two weeks.  If you are a nail bitter, you may need to go in sooner.

Will Nail Polish help my Natural Nails?

Yes, it can if it is a high quality polish.  Some nail polish will have strengtheners and fortifiers in them to help give your natural nails a little more support.

Does Polish make my nails grow faster?  No, but it can help protect the nail, by giving it a little extra thickness.

mani pedi color

What is the best way to protect my Natural Nails?

Protect your natural nails by treating them like jewels not tools.  This means to value them, protect them with the use of rubber gloves, when doing household chores.  Keep them clean, and moisturized.  File out any rough edges to protect the nails from snags and tears.  When you exercise proper care on a regular basis, upkeep is at a minimum.

Chemistry and Cosmetology

Chemistry in the Salon

Have you ever wondered why chemistry is so very important to the field of Cosmetology?  Every day clients come into the salon with special needs that require a little chemistry to fix.  From a simple re-adjustment to their shampooing and conditioning  to de-frizz summer stressed hair, to the more complicated, but much needed color adjustment when a home color that goes wrong. Beautiful hair, skin and nails, always start with a healthy body inside, and salon chemistry on the outside.  Today's stylist must be well versed in Salon Chemistry, to meet their clients needs.Hair Chemist

Salon chemicals, as well as over the counter beauty products change frequently and require a stylist and salon professional to attend regular training to update their education on product knowledge and salon and home use.  There is a vast variety of products that are sold over the counter that can easily damage the hair.

cosmetic ingred - Copy - Copy

Why do you think salon professionals should know what is available to their clients over the counter at the local drug store, supermarket, or discount store?  Simply because, at some point in time, our clients, may get a hold of these products, that are labeled "easy to use", "for home use", or "gentle formula", and if used incorrectly, or over some other "safe" product and wreck havoc on the hair.

attitude 7

When the client does this, what happens next?  They call us!  So we must always be prepared, mentally, as well as physically to bring balance, and reduce the stress that these products and services have caused our clients.

Hair stylist and salon professionals, here is my advice.  Study, Study, Study!  Go to as much education as you can, ask your supply house reps, for product knowledge on all of the products you carry, so you can know the in's and outs of each product.  Know the pH, the molecular weight, the chemical makeup of each product, ask the about the key ingredients, what type of protein is used, the key benefits, and any contraindications of the products.  Get the MSDS's on each product.  Know how to store and how to dispose of any unused product.  Know the shelf life, and how you need to mix and what not to mix with the product.  Does this seem like a lot of information to keep track of?  Well this is just the beginning.

thumbnail_003

Don't forget the need for client records!  Record the beginning analysis of the clients hair, what and how it was used, and the end result.  This is very valuable data for next time you service the client. Be honest with yourself as well as your client. The client will appreciate the effort you put forth to help them with their service as well as knowing that you are a serious professional who will take care of them and their hair.  Customer service is always first and foremost, but you must go the extra mile and keep records so you can keep track of the needs of your clients.  With all of the ever changing chemicals and products it is very important to track your progress, and the occasional set back that might occur in your client's hair history. Remember, If you are a true professional, you have the knowledge base needed to help your client with all of their beauty needs.  There are no mistakes only missed opportunities.  We can always help our clients if we just study the situation and put forth the effort!

Happy Clients = a Happy Salon!  Go out and make the effort to make someone Happy!

Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy Partners with Leaders in the Beauty Industry

Congratulations to Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy on it's 10 Year Anniversary!

IMG_0834[1]

Penny Miller started her cosmetology career in 1982, here in the state of Oklahoma.  After a few years in the business she purchased Phase II Hair Design, and slowly converted a Barber Shop into a Cosmetology Salon. During her career, Penny has trained with several product companies such as Matrix, Redken, Paul Mitchell, Sebastian, Roffler, American Crew, Montage, Aquage, Scruples, TiGi, Sexy Hair Concepts, OPI, Tammy Taylor, & Joico, just to name a few. Constantly going to hair shows and educational events she furthered her knowledge in the Cosmetology Industry, brought this information back to the salon and helped to educate her staff on new methods and practices relating to cosmetology.

Later Penny went back to school again to achieve her Master Cosmetology Instructor License, and then in January of 2003, she opened her school, Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy, where she has partnered with several product companies such as CHI, to give her students the advantage of working with strong American Educators and American based products.

Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy, located in beautiful downtown Pauls Valley, Oklahoma is a small beauty college offering a full range of education in Cosmetology, Nail Technology, Esthetics, and even Instructor Courses.  Small classes mean that each student gets a lot of one on one time with the instructor, and their education is individualized for their own particular needs. Everyone learns differently, and when you customize the teaching methods you get a better result with helping each student achieve their goals.  Modeled after the apprentice programs, popular in Europe, the Academy offers a real salon environment for students to learn in and real hands on experience with one on one with clients on the clinic floor. P.M.C.A. currently holds a 100% pass rate at the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology.  All courses are offered at the Academy giving the students a wider range of career opportunities for employment in the future.  Part-time and full-time courses are available with flexible payment plans.

Guest artists are invited in to help students learn about a variety of product lines, so their education is not limited to one school of thought.  Since opening in 2003, Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy has invited in several product educators, such as RX Systems, BackScratchers, Spa Girl, Lorea’l, CHI, Joico,  OPI, Tammy Taylor Systems, Matrix, Aquage, Wella-Sebastian.  We have had special events such as Glamour Photography, Computer Imaging, Nail Classes, Little Princess Parties, Photo Sessions, just to name a few.  Our students have had the opportunity to participate in the hair and make up on a movie production, and have worked  Bridal Fairs, and Fashion Shows & Wedding Parties.  Our students have attended hair shows, special business seminars, field trips to product manufacturing plants, salons, & suppliers and have enjoyed additional information from guest speakers pertaining to salon management and career advancement & financial planning.

A day in the life of a student.  The class day starts at 8:00 a.m. in Theory Class. Students learn textbook information, procedures, state law, safety and sanitation.  This is where students get basic information. Lecture, demonstrations, video presentations, lab equipment, computers and other educational aids assist in the learning process.  After Theory Class, students go to the clinic floor to apply their newly acquired knowledge with a hands on approach.  They are all given mannequins and tools and supplies, and then they start to work applying their new skills, practice, practice, practice, is the motto during this session in the learning process.  After students have reached a level of expertise, they begin working with clients. Clients add a more personal touch to the educational experience because it is very important for each student to learn the necessary people skills to work successfully in a salon.  All work is closely monitored by the instructor, and all services are checked for accuracy. At each level of training, the bar is raised and we expect more out of our students.  By the time they finish the course, they will easily pass Oklahoma State Board Testing, but more important, they will be ready to start their new career in an upscale salon.

What types of careers could a cosmetology graduate expect to find?  Well, here in the state of Oklahoma, the possibilities are really limitless.  Today’s graduate can start in a salon as a beginning hairstylist, and work their way up to master hairstylist working behind the chair doing a wide variety of services from cuts, styles, waxing, facials, manicures, pedicures, massage, cosmetic application, color application, perming and texturizing services, highlighting, etc.  Cosmetology professionals are also need in MediSpa’s for client care pre-op and post-op.  They can go to work for product manufacturers doing demo’s and educational events.  They can assist master stylist’s, learning more about the business, work as a stylist on a cruise ship, or a resort. They can work doing glamour services, cosmetic application, and even hair & makeup on a movie set.  Later, they can even work their way up to salon management or even ownership.  Beauty professionals can go into writing, and even into education. Really in today’s market the possibilities are endless.  All they really need is a “Can Do” attitude. We are in a zero unemployment field that needs more stylists and technicians each year. There is a real shortage of hairstylists out there and we have salons call us regularly looking for new talent. With all the new products, techniques, and services out there now this is a very exciting field to get into.  I have worked in this field for almost 30 years now and it never gets boring!

What type of person is a good fit for a cosmetology career? Anyone who truly cares about people!  If you like people and helping them with their beauty needs, there is no career that can be more personally rewarding!  Young or old, male or female, clients are always in need of Beauty Professionals. There is nothing better than making someone feel special! The look on their face when they see the new look you gave them is priceless. You can boost someone’s self-esteem, help them to look and feel better, and give them that little bit of self-confidence to get them through some of life’s little challenges. What better way to make a living! And YOU can create your own payscale….Yes, the sky is the limit, the more you work, the more you earn, it’s really a Win, Win situation.

If you know of a friend or relative that has thought about a career in the field of Cosmetology, We would love to meet them and help them with their educational needs to get them on the right path in this field. We love making a difference in our students lives, and cultivating new talent. This is a wonderful career that can be very lucrative, personally, professionally, and financially.  Help us to help others on their new paths. You don’t have to go out of town for a great education. Please check out Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy.

Professional Salon Safety and Sanitation

Have you ever wondered what YOU should be looking for when you enter a Professional Salon?

What is required by the State?  What is required by your city?  What about national standards of sanitation?  How did your stylist or nail tech get their state license? Is the Salon clean, safe and sanitary?  Have they had any violations?

cosmetology6

These are all very important questions.  And they all deserve answers.

Here in the State of Oklahoma, the state regulatory office is the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology.  The OSBC sets up the rules and regulations that are set forth at the state level, for education requirements, licensing requirements for schools, salons, and all cosmetology related establishments.  They also oversee the safety and sanitation standards for each of these establishments.  They are here for the public, salon workers, and students, to make sure procedures are followed and that everyone is kept safe.   The OSBC also is there for salon professionals at the legislative level to help oversee laws and how they effect our industry.

flag 5

So .... When you enter your chosen establishment, look for the following:

1. Cleanliness, clean tools, combs and brushes.

2. Posted licenses.

3. Ethical behavior and a professional atmosphere.

If you feel like the establishment is not following safe sanitation practices it is up to you to decide to frequent the establishment or not.  It is your health and well being that is at risk.
