Ladies, remember, the hair styles will mimic the fashion. When you wear your soft sheer blouse or skirt, hair should flow, be soft and shiny. What is it like being a student at Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy?

images (42)

Well, we start at 8:00 a.m. with Theory Class.  This class is usually around one hour.  This is where the textbook learning starts….We may have lecture, a how to demo, watch video, or have a power point presentation, explaining the fundamentals of Cosmetology education and it’s application in the Beauty Industry.

IMG_0839[1]We have a relaxed atmosphere where students participate in active learning, we welcome open discussion about all of the topics we teach.  This helps the students get a better understanding of how to apply the basic theory to salon life.

Hair Chemist

What do students learn in Theory?

The Basics first, such as general sanitation and infection control, rules and regulations needed in a Beauty Establishment. Master Instructor, Penny Miller, helps the students to perfect Customer Service, Ethics, Basic Procedures for hair styling, hair shaping or cutting, texture services, perming, coloring, blonding procedures, finger waving and pin curls, roller sets, blow out services, foiling, braiding, manicure and pedicure services, facial services, waxing, massage and cosmetic application.images (35)

The Salon world revolves around the client, and students need to understand this in order to be a success in their career.

This is just the beginning of their journey.

FUN – FUN – FUN!

So what’s next?  PRACTICE – PRACTICE – PRACTICE.

Students practice daily on the mannequins to get the hang of hair styling procedures and after they test out on all of the above basics, then they can start working on the public.

_DSC7079

Is it safe for the customers to have students work on them?

YES!  ALL WORK IS SUPERVISED BY MASTER INSTRUCTORS WHO WORK CLOSELY WITH ALL OF THE STUDENTS.

2013 Aug 237

A lot of our customers state that they feel like they get closer attention at the school then at some salons. The instructors check all work prior to the student finishing to make sure the client is happy and satisfied.

Do students get to learn modern techniques?

YES! YES! YES!!!

fanasy hair 2

oct2016salon-027

We are a CHI Partnered School,

so students get to see the latest and greatest runway looks, and fun, crazy things that are going on in fashion and at hair shows.  We practice some of these techniques, and explain how the look has evolved from something in the past.

Believe it or not history repeats itself….and some of the styles we see as new and hot now,  were here a long, long time ago.

images (15) So if students get the proper education in basic techniques they can compete on the runways of tomorrow!

What about Products…

There are so many, how do you choose what to use?   This is again where education comes in.  Basic products, do basic things, with proper education and product knowledge, students learn about a wide variety of products, how they work, and what is best for a particular type or style of hair.  Farouk CHI

This separates pros from amateurs, and we all know the right product works wonders.

Tools and Techniques- why is that important?

Training in the technology of different tools used in hair styling and other beauty services will help the student to work smarter not harder.  This is a key to longevity in the business.  Have you ever wondered why when you leave the salon, your hair style will last and last, and when you do it at home it never looks the same?  Well it all comes down to education, the right selection of product, the correct pattern when the hair is blow out, and the proper tool to set the style, your client will look fabulous and you will feel wonderful for achieving the perfect look for your  client.

WHAT A GREAT FEELING!  WHAT COULD BE BETTER?

What do our students say about Cosmetology School?

Here are a few of their comments:

“I like cosmo school because it allows me to be creative and learn the new trends in hair and beauty.  It’s also fun and exciting to learn cool color techniques like foiling and balayage.  My fellow students are also very nice and it’s exciting to learn with others who have interests in cosmetology.”   #I<3vino

“I love having the opportunity to help someone make their appearance better than it is.  I want to be able to see on my client’s face that they love what I did & that it helped boost their self confidence.” Morgan S.

“I love Cosmo school because I’ve wanted to learn to do hair ever since I was little, I grew up in my grannies shop watching and helping her.  Now that I’m actually getting to be in this school and begin my future career, my favorite thing so far is coloring hair, and doing hair cuts.  I love learning new coloring techniques and actually getting to do them on the public.  This school allows me to do what I love, and make people look beautiful, and I Love that.” Chade

“We are getting a top notch education.  We have great textbooks and tons of instructional videos.  Many product educators from CHI, Joico, Backscratchers, etc have visited and taught us about their products.  We have lots of great clients that request anything from flat tops to perms.  We are getting tons of hands on experience.  Penny works with us on our schedule.  I have two children and Penny has always been very understanding”  J.C.

What is Reflexology? Why in the Salon?

Reflexology Helps to Relieve STRESS!

Reflexology is a wonderful method of pressure point massage used primarily on the hands and feet to induce relaxation and stress reduction.

mani pedi

History of Reflexology.

cosmet ancient

It originated in ancient times around 2,330 B.C.   The record of the Egyptians left was found in the “Physicians Tomb” from the early 6th dynasty.  Pictures depicting the massaging of the hands and feet and had hieroglyphics which translate to “Don’t hurt me”, and the reply: “I shall act so you praise me”.

Asian cultures have used acupressure or Shiatso and accupuncture which uses needles instead of massage.  Most cultures have some type of relaxation techniques using the hands or feet.ancient cosmet 5 - Copy - Copy

Dr. William H. Firzgerald is usually referred to as the pioneer of Reflexology which he called Zone Therapy in his 1917 book, Zone Therapy, or Relieving Pain At Home.

Eunice Ingham expanded and helped polularize Reflexology with her tow books, Stories The Feet Can Tell, and Stories the Feet Have Told.  Mildred Carter, Dr. Maybelle Segal, Anna Kaye & Don C. Matchan, and Dr. Elson M. Haas, The Reflexology Workout have also written scholarly works on the subject.

So….What is the Definition of Reflexology?

“A reflex in an involuntary response to a stimulus,” according to the Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary.  A simple definition of Reflexology is massaging specific areas of the hands or feet for the purpose of relieving the stress or pain in corresponding areas of the body.

STRESS

The biological concept of stress was first developed by Hans Selye who intended originally for “stress” to indicate a cause rather than effect.  He made a linguistic error and gave the term stress to the effect and later had to create the term “stressor” to explain the cause.

Stress is defined in medicine as the result produced when a structure, system or organism is acted upon by forces that disrupt equilibrium or produce strain.

It is generally believed that a little stress is required to maintain certain biological organisms, however, too much can cause pathological changes in the body.

Reflexology relieves stress and tension, improves blood supply and helps unblock nerve impulses, to achieve homeostasis.

How REFLEXOLOGY Works.

There are over 7,000 nerve endings on the bottom of each foot.  Stimulation of these nerve endings sends signals along to the spinal cord, and up to the thalamus gland in the brain, which produces its own opiate-like painkillers called endorphins.  Reflexology stimulates the body’s own pain killing system.  Similar to acupressure, the application of pressure to the points over the whole body, and acupuncture, the placement of needles in certain points in the body.  However, Reflexology uses only massage on the hands or feet to relieve the stress of the body.  foot massage

Reflexology is also similar to Shiatsu, which is an oriental massage in which the fingers are pressed on particular points, called tsubo, that ease aches, pains, tension and symptoms of disease.  The 361 Tsubos are also Acupunture points and the pressure points that are located along the “meridian lines,” the fourteen channels through which the body’s energy flows according to Oriental philosophy.

Whether it is a pressure point or a needle point, it is the nervous system reactions to this stimuli that begins the process of releasing pain killers from the brain and placed into the blood stream to distribute throughout the body.

We find that reflexology paired with foot, hand and chair massage takes the client to a new level or relaxation.  This helps to reduce daily stress and give the body the opportunity to re-balance itself and help induce greater well being.

Aromatherapy is another massage add on that can be used in hair, nailimages (46) and facial services.  If your are interested in more information about any of these services check out the subjects listed in our information or topic boxes, or give us a call 405-238-3426 or facebook us at facebook.com/Penny Miller/Salonpmca.

We are here for YOU, and want your experience to be the best ever.  We are constantly looking for ways to help our clients with their beauty needs, and sometimes this involves helping the client to relax and unwind after a hard day.  If we can help you with anything please let us know.

Penny Miller Group Pic 1Best Wishes,

Penny Miller
