Why is Education Important to the Beauty Industry?

Look around you and you will see people everywhere in all walks of life doing things.  Some do things well, some do okay, some do horrible and  others are Outstanding!   WHY IS THIS?

Education is KEY to Everything!

With the advent of YouTube and online information, there is no doubt an information overload.  Information is wonderful, however, misinformation can be VERY DANGEROUS.  You can get a very false sense of what is important, what is time sensitive, and what is real.  Just because someone has a Million Likes doesn’t mean they are a master of their craft.  It simply means they are entertaining.  With the trend on entertaining I have seen so many YouTube entertainers doing so many crazy and dangerous things it is scary.

In the Beauty Industry we deal with live people.  We touch people.  People who know they want to look good, but don’t know how.

It is our job to ask, analyze and access the situation, and to make a professional determination of if the service is a good idea, and if it is achievable.  We have to be honest. We must have integrity.   We want to see our clients again, and again.  We want to help them to achieve their goals.  We know our work will speak for itself, good or bad.  We are not YouTubers laughing and joking about the clients problems, a client’s problem is our problem and we want to help them attain their goals.

So how do we come to understand the needs and wants of our clients?  How do we determine what products to use?  How do we figure out the mode of application, timing and technique?  We go back to the  Basics of Cosmetology 101!  There are no short cuts!  There is no magic formula you can use on every single client!  Each client is different.  Each client is an individual.  Even identical twins can have very seperate lives, with seperate needs and cannot be serviced the same while in the stylist’s chair.  EDUCATION IS KEY!

Did you know that in Basic Cosmetology students learn about basic health and nutrition, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, infection control, histology of the hair, aromatherapy, reflexology, communication, chemistry, electricity, design principles, color artistry, nail structure and growth, nail and skin disorders and diseases, they also learn about the history of the craft, wig and hairpieces, braiding, hairstyling, haircoloring, haircutting and the mathematics of haircutting, hair removal, facials, facial makeup, they go on to learn about nails including natural and artificial nail care, tips and wraps, freeforms, acrylics, hard and soft gels, and then they finish with salon and business training, state board licensure and employment?

In the field of Cosmetology, things change very quickly.  Products and tools are constantly being upgraded and modified and it is very important for even the seasoned profession to attend seminars and workshops to further their education on products, chemistry and advances in tools.  It’s an ever changing World, The Beauty Industry, and if you don’t keep up ….You will be left behind.

I have been in this wonderful profession since 1982, and I still love it! I surround myself with fellow educators who have the same passion I have for the Beauty Industry.

CHI Educators

I’m still amazed when I see a new artist present their take on an old procedure.  I go to many different trainings each year.  I love seeing all the new fun colors and styles.

I learn something new everyday, because I choose to.  I could sit and do nothing, but how boring would that be.  If you enjoy your craft, and seek education, and strive to be your best you will be a success in this business.  You control your destiny!

Soar like an Eagle, don’t travel with a bunch of turkeys.

Winter Weather and Beauty Tips

Burrrrr…..It’s Really Cold Outside!

Wow, it’s really cold here in P.V. today.  I guess winter has arrived.  How would you like some tips on Winterizing you hair, skin and nails?

We are a full service CHI Partner School, so we offer a wide range of services such as scalp treatments, nail treatments and facials. In the following video you will see one of the basic procedures for a spa conditioning services using CHI Tea Tree Products. We also carry the new CHI Rose Hip Oil Products as well as many others.

Deep moisturize for hair is most important when the winds are blowing and the heat is on in our homes and businesses.  To properly deep condition it is very important to cleanse the hair first to prep the hair and remove any residue from previous hair products such as waxes, gels and hairsprays.  After cleansing, rinse and towel dry hair to remove any excess water, then add a deep moisturizer such as Aquage healing conditioner, comb through, bag and leave on for 1-3 minutes, rinse, towel dry and proceed with your styling techniques.

Ok, so Now for the Nails.  Are your nails dry, cracking, or peeling?  Are your hands parched from the Winter winds, and the indoor heat?  The best thing for this type of problem is a spa manicure.  We start by cleansing the hands with a sugar scrub, follow with a hand massage with a deep moisturizing lotion and then dip in a warm mixture of skin conditioning oils and paraffin, your hands are then wrapped in mitts and allowed to deep treat the skin of your hands and the nail plates to soothe your winter woe’s.  Once the conditioning is complete we finish the manicure with cuticle care, nail care, and then we apply the polish of your choice.  Your hands will feel wonderful and your nails will look great! We now offer the full line of Cuccio Nail Colors – Check out these beautiful shades!

Skin care at it’s finest.  The European Facial.

Does you skin need an extra boost?  Winter is tough on our faces, and we all know we need to put our best face forward.  facial machine

The European Facial can be a combination of many different types of treatments using a multi-function machine to help with deep exfoliation, steaming, deep pore cleansing, micro-dermabrasion, vacuuming the skin, massage and even galvanic and light therapy such as  u.v. treatments to help the skin heal from the harsh effects of the weather.

What about at home skincare?  It is always important to cleanse and moisturize your skin daily, especially when the weather is so harsh.  facial home

Just like the hair it is very important to cleanse the skin first, then immediately apply your moisturizer. This will seal in the moisture and help to better hydrate your skin.  Scrubs are great to do at home about once a week, but if you overstimulate the skin too often you could possibly increase the chance of an acne flare up is you are acne prone.

Ask a Stylist- Frizz Free Curls

Curls are Divine, but Frizz is Not Fabulous.

Curly Curls, Natural Curls, Curls for Girls, Beachy Waves, Volume Curls, Spiral Curls, Rope Perms, Wand Curls, Flat Iron Curls….the list goes on and on.

So, what is the key to having beautiful curls with out the frizz?    Do you want no frizz hair?  Then you need -Proper Home Maintenance. It goes way beyond a simple shampoo and conditioner. When the heat rises, and the humidity is off the scale, you can almost guarantee that you will have a Bad Hair Day. If you don’t select your products wisely your hair could be a disaster.

With so many products and tools out there, how can you decide what is perfect for you?

Ask your stylist!  Yes, I said ask your stylist.  Beautiful hair is our job.  Stylists who are serious about their career are willing to stay up to date with the most current products, trends, ingredients and regimes to help your hair look its best at all times.

Hair is fiber.  It behaves like fiber, some hair is soft and silky, and other hair may be rough and coarse.  That doesn’t mean one is better than the other, it simply means different hair types will perform differently. For example, when you want your soft hair to hold curl, you have to starch or stiffen it, but if you stiffen it too much it becomes stiff and crunchy, no one wants stiff, crunchy hair.  This is where pliant strength comes in. The trick is to get the fiber to perform the way you want it to.

Pliant strength is a gage on how easily the hair can bend; how flexible supple and adaptable the hair is.

How much conditioner is needed?  If you are using a quality product, you only need a small amount.  After you shampoo and rinse well, towel blot the hair to get the excess water out, then add the conditioner, comb through and leave on 3-5 minutes, it takes that long for the cuticle of the hair shaft to close down again, and this will help to keep the frizz down.  There is no such thing as an instant conditioner.  Rinse out, and then apply your styling product, comb through and style as desired.

Product cocktailing is an excellent way to build your pliant strength without overdoing it.  Selecting the right cocktail for your hair type will make your hair smooth, bouncy and frizz free.

Selection of Professional Hair Care Products

With so many products out there in the market place today, it is really hard to keep up with all of them. It is so very important to keep the hair in the best condition possible, especially with all of the new fun color trends, that can really take a toll on the condition of the hair.  I, as a professional stylist, personally recommend working with one product line at a time until you know all of the ups and downs of the line, the ingredients, how they perform and what type of product works best with the specific hair type.

Wow!  What a wonderful time we had at the annual CHI Symposium in Houston!

We started our day at Lone Star College, where we enjoyed guest speakers from all over the world.  Speakers from Modern Salon, Esquire Magazine, Global Artistic Team, Global Platform artists, Research and Development, Social Media, Founders of Farouk Systems as well as other companies who are now partnering with CHI for great things to come in the upcoming year.

So, You may ask, What is New for 2017?

CHI ROSE HIP

A scientifically formulated color maintenance system, Rose Hip Oil naturally moisturizes hair while keeping the cuticle closed and locking in hair color. Naturally high in antioxidants and Vitamin C, CHI Rose Hip Oil Color Nurture boosts color’s vibrancy and shine for long-lasting, salon-fresh color maintenance.

Yes, the hot new products for 2017 are the Rose Hip Color Nurture System and the New Men’s Line by Esquire.  But the highlight of the symposium was the wonderful instructors.  Taking time out of their busy lives to share their talent and insights about the Beauty Industry. Rocky was wonderful with his photo session how to’s and his up styles and styling classes.  We really had a blast in his classes!  Lisa Marie shared a lot of information on platform artist work and how fabulous Farouk Systems are to work with.  Miss Dixie is always an inspiration on helping connect the schools, students and salons together with advanced education and fun activities.  Special speakers advised us about social media, photo shoots, technology in the salon and school and how to advance schools and the artists to the next level.  Lots of new and fun things coming your way from CHI in 2017!

We enjoyed participating in the time capsule ceremony.  What fun!  To see all of the information from today’s styles, chemicals, and techniques, pictures and much more, placed in that time capsule and buried, we will see what our future generation thinks about us….so curious to see what the future holds in the way of the Beauty Industry, this is an exciting time.

Beautiful New Colors For Fall

austin-2016-078  What Hair Color is Hot for Fall?

We just made it back from the World’s Fair in Austin, Texas, where hair designers and professionals like Anna Cantu, pictured left, gave us insight as to what techniques and colors would be popular this season.

We had a wonderful time.  Getting to see all of the New Fun Styles, Products and Techniques.

 So what’s In?

austin-2016-092

Blended Hair Color!  Color that “Melts”,  no harsh lines, no stripes, tone on tone with lots of shine and dimension.  Ombre’, Sombre’, Color Merging and Melting,  Color Mapping,   ….all such soft and pretty techniques. These techniques are blueprints for hair color,  colors that require the stylist to think out the style before they begin….Truly artistic!

What shades are Popular?

In the fall as the season changes, and wardrobe colors change, this is always a great time to warm up hair color.  Soft shades of gold and copper will always be hot during this season.  This year, however, we are seeing a lot of matte color, color such as granny blondes, with silver tones with blue and violet undertones.  Matte colors do not reflect light as well as warm colors, but on the perfect skin tone with the right cosmetics they can be very striking.

The fun of hair color is that change does not have to be permanent. Hair color can be mixed to be a try on or semi, demi shade and then if you really love it we can convert it to a permanent color.

What about those crazy shades of hair color?

They can be very fun and exciting….but they will fade away very quickly without very high maintenance.

If you are interest in more articles about what we saw at this years World’s Fair, stay tuned in for more posts.  We can’t wait to bring more of these techniques back to Pauls Valley.
