Color….What’s Right for Me???

How to Choose a Color that will work for YOU!

Yes, Hair color can be a lot of fun, but not when a mistake is made and you end up with a color scheme that is not attractive on you.hair color app 2

Here are a few tips to help you decide what type of color is best for YOU.

1. Think about your youth.  Children always have beautiful hair color.  This is before we use and abuse our hair.  Over process, Over Styled, Over Colored, Over Stressed…..Hair can take a lot of abuse from us.  Remember when we were just  a little younger.  Hair was silky, shiny, bouncy, had great texture, volume and memory.  When we looked at our hair, as a child, it was not just one one flat shade, it had dimension.  Remember this.

carmel highlights

2.  Think about how often we can afford to come into the salon for maintenance.  Time and money is always a consideration.  How much money do you want to spend on maintenance, but most importantly, how often, time wise, can you afford to go to the salon and spend time for maintenance?

Strong vibrant, artificial tones require a higher maintenance schedule, where as an ombre’ color if not too far from your regular base could be much lower maintenance.

3.  When YOU  look at your clothing, your most favorite pieces, what colors are they?  Do you like blues, violets, greys? Or do you like reds, yellows, and rich browns?  Is there a blouse or shirt that makes you feel special when you wear it?  When we are young we naturally are drawn to colors that make us feel better about ourselves, as we age, we put those feelings aside and conform to what we think other people think looks better on us….Now is a time to re-visit our youth and find what colors help make us feel special….

color wheel - CopyThe Color Wheel

Now that you have selected your most favorite colors, you will find that if you selected colors that are on the warm side of the color wheel, such as red, orange, yellows, or even yellow greens, you will probably look better in warm, sunny colors.    If you selected cool colors such as violets, blues, greens, and violet reds, then you will probably look better in cool, icy colors.  Neutrals are great on everyone, however, they are sometimes a little boring, and it is nice to add a splash of one of your favorites into the mix.

4.  What is your natural color?  This is a good question, since a lot of us haven’t seen our natural color for years, and years.  If it has been at least four weeks since you have had a re-touch, you can look at the base section of your hair and see your natural color. It will look dark if you press it down against your head, so hold it up, try to fan it out and let light reflect through it. hs4

Now, what do you see?  Is it light, medium or dark?  Do you see cool tones, or warm tones?  Do you see any silver (Grey Hair)? Does it look mousey, or bright?

Try to remember….Why did I change it????

Did I get bored with it?  Was I attempting to cover the grey? Go blonde? Brighten it Up? If you like what you see, do you want to go back to your natural?

Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy Partners with Leaders in the Beauty Industry

Congratulations to Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy on it’s 10 Year Anniversary!

IMG_0834[1]

Penny Miller started her cosmetology career in 1982, here in the state of Oklahoma.  After a few years in the business she purchased Phase II Hair Design, and slowly converted a Barber Shop into a Cosmetology Salon. During her career, Penny has trained with several product companies such as Matrix, Redken, Paul Mitchell, Sebastian, Roffler, American Crew, Montage, Aquage, Scruples, TiGi, Sexy Hair Concepts, OPI, Tammy Taylor, & Joico, just to name a few. Constantly going to hair shows and educational events she furthered her knowledge in the Cosmetology Industry, brought this information back to the salon and helped to educate her staff on new methods and practices relating to cosmetology.

Later Penny went back to school again to achieve her Master Cosmetology Instructor License, and then in January of 2003, she opened her school, Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy, where she has partnered with several product companies such as CHI, to give her students the advantage of working with strong American Educators and American based products.

Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy, located in beautiful downtown Pauls Valley, Oklahoma is a small beauty college offering a full range of education in Cosmetology, Nail Technology, Esthetics, and even Instructor Courses.  Small classes mean that each student gets a lot of one on one time with the instructor, and their education is individualized for their own particular needs. Everyone learns differently, and when you customize the teaching methods you get a better result with helping each student achieve their goals.  Modeled after the apprentice programs, popular in Europe, the Academy offers a real salon environment for students to learn in and real hands on experience with one on one with clients on the clinic floor. P.M.C.A. currently holds a 100% pass rate at the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology.  All courses are offered at the Academy giving the students a wider range of career opportunities for employment in the future.  Part-time and full-time courses are available with flexible payment plans.

Guest artists are invited in to help students learn about a variety of product lines, so their education is not limited to one school of thought.  Since opening in 2003, Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy has invited in several product educators, such as RX Systems, BackScratchers, Spa Girl, Lorea’l, CHI, Joico,  OPI, Tammy Taylor Systems, Matrix, Aquage, Wella-Sebastian.  We have had special events such as Glamour Photography, Computer Imaging, Nail Classes, Little Princess Parties, Photo Sessions, just to name a few.  Our students have had the opportunity to participate in the hair and make up on a movie production, and have worked  Bridal Fairs, and Fashion Shows & Wedding Parties.  Our students have attended hair shows, special business seminars, field trips to product manufacturing plants, salons, & suppliers and have enjoyed additional information from guest speakers pertaining to salon management and career advancement & financial planning.

A day in the life of a student.  The class day starts at 8:00 a.m. in Theory Class. Students learn textbook information, procedures, state law, safety and sanitation.  This is where students get basic information. Lecture, demonstrations, video presentations, lab equipment, computers and other educational aids assist in the learning process.  After Theory Class, students go to the clinic floor to apply their newly acquired knowledge with a hands on approach.  They are all given mannequins and tools and supplies, and then they start to work applying their new skills, practice, practice, practice, is the motto during this session in the learning process.  After students have reached a level of expertise, they begin working with clients. Clients add a more personal touch to the educational experience because it is very important for each student to learn the necessary people skills to work successfully in a salon.  All work is closely monitored by the instructor, and all services are checked for accuracy. At each level of training, the bar is raised and we expect more out of our students.  By the time they finish the course, they will easily pass Oklahoma State Board Testing, but more important, they will be ready to start their new career in an upscale salon.

What types of careers could a cosmetology graduate expect to find?  Well, here in the state of Oklahoma, the possibilities are really limitless.  Today’s graduate can start in a salon as a beginning hairstylist, and work their way up to master hairstylist working behind the chair doing a wide variety of services from cuts, styles, waxing, facials, manicures, pedicures, massage, cosmetic application, color application, perming and texturizing services, highlighting, etc.  Cosmetology professionals are also need in MediSpa’s for client care pre-op and post-op.  They can go to work for product manufacturers doing demo’s and educational events.  They can assist master stylist’s, learning more about the business, work as a stylist on a cruise ship, or a resort. They can work doing glamour services, cosmetic application, and even hair & makeup on a movie set.  Later, they can even work their way up to salon management or even ownership.  Beauty professionals can go into writing, and even into education. Really in today’s market the possibilities are endless.  All they really need is a “Can Do” attitude. We are in a zero unemployment field that needs more stylists and technicians each year. There is a real shortage of hairstylists out there and we have salons call us regularly looking for new talent. With all the new products, techniques, and services out there now this is a very exciting field to get into.  I have worked in this field for almost 30 years now and it never gets boring!

What type of person is a good fit for a cosmetology career? Anyone who truly cares about people!  If you like people and helping them with their beauty needs, there is no career that can be more personally rewarding!  Young or old, male or female, clients are always in need of Beauty Professionals. There is nothing better than making someone feel special! The look on their face when they see the new look you gave them is priceless. You can boost someone’s self-esteem, help them to look and feel better, and give them that little bit of self-confidence to get them through some of life’s little challenges. What better way to make a living! And YOU can create your own payscale….Yes, the sky is the limit, the more you work, the more you earn, it’s really a Win, Win situation.

If you know of a friend or relative that has thought about a career in the field of Cosmetology, We would love to meet them and help them with their educational needs to get them on the right path in this field. We love making a difference in our students lives, and cultivating new talent. This is a wonderful career that can be very lucrative, personally, professionally, and financially.  Help us to help others on their new paths. You don’t have to go out of town for a great education. Please check out Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy.

Professional Salon Safety and Sanitation

Have you ever wondered what YOU should be looking for when you enter a Professional Salon?

What is required by the State?  What is required by your city?  What about national standards of sanitation?  How did your stylist or nail tech get their state license? Is the Salon clean, safe and sanitary?  Have they had any violations?

cosmetology6

These are all very important questions.  And they all deserve answers.

Here in the State of Oklahoma, the state regulatory office is the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology.  The OSBC sets up the rules and regulations that are set forth at the state level, for education requirements, licensing requirements for schools, salons, and all cosmetology related establishments.  They also oversee the safety and sanitation standards for each of these establishments.  They are here for the public, salon workers, and students, to make sure procedures are followed and that everyone is kept safe.   The OSBC also is there for salon professionals at the legislative level to help oversee laws and how they effect our industry.

flag 5

So …. When you enter your chosen establishment, look for the following:

1. Cleanliness, clean tools, combs and brushes.

2. Posted licenses.

3. Ethical behavior and a professional atmosphere.

If you feel like the establishment is not following safe sanitation practices it is up to you to decide to frequent the establishment or not.  It is your health and well being that is at risk.

Videos – Product Cocktailing with Aquage

What is product cocktailing?

Beautiful hair…What is it and how do you get it? When you look at all those photo spreads in the magazines and wonder, how did they get that models hair to do what it’s doing, she has so much hair and its so…shiny, bouncy, full, curly, straight, and beautiful. Well first of all that model was in “Hair and Makeup” for several hours with her stylist with the perfect blend of products, just for her. It’s a long known secret, it’s not always the product, but knowing how to use the product the perfect way. We take that concept one step further with “Product Cocktailing”. So, what is Product Cocktailing? Well it is a term used when you add two or more styling products together to enhance the desired effect, and to customize the product effect just for you.  Sounds good, right?  Well here are just a few examples of how to use product and how to mix product together for a special effect.

There are a few things to consider when cocktailing, so please watch for future articles with more information.

Well if so, here are a few quick tutorials, on how to layer product to get the desired effect.

Biomega video behave + text me….

One of the first things to consider is what do I want my hair to do? Do I want it softer, silkier, shiny? Do I need it firmer, stronger & stiff, to hold a curl better? Do I want it to be springy and have bounce? Do I want curls, body or a shape that fits the contours of my head?

Once you have decided exactly what effect you want the fiber of your hair to mimic, then you can select your product. If this is confusing to you ask your salon professional for help…we are here to help you. Here are a few examples of some simple cocktails or blends. Remember to keep it simple at first and only combine 2 products at a time.
For fine hair that is too soft and won’t hold curl…
Use… Fortifying ultragel with just a little thickening spray gel.

Tips for the Perfect Haircut and Style

Advice for Clients when selecting a

New Style.

When a client goes to a salon, they expect to get the look they have always wanted.  Then, why is it, that sometimes it’s great and other times it’s just ok?

Have you ever left the salon with a look that you feel is totally different than what you asked for?

Did you feel like you were rushed through and that no one listened to you? Did you feel like the stylist talked you into something that they wanted instead of what you asked for?  Or did you leave the salon looking great but when you tried to duplicate it at home nothing would work. Well these are all communication breakdowns.  If you have a stylist that fails to listen, then you have a problem.

When you see someone with a style that you think looks great on them don’t be afraid to ask them the name of their stylist.  Friends, relatives, and co-workers are also a good source  for recommendations when choosing a stylist.

Communication is the Key.

Here are a few tips to better communicate with your stylist.

1.  Photographs.  Yes, plain old fashioned printed photos or pictures.  Take your stylist several photos, and then discuss possible options.

Salons are full of magazines and styling guides for reference. If you bring along a picture from home or select one from an in-house pictorial, you’re more likely to get just what you want. Be reasonable. Not all cuts and styles may work with your hair texture and some can accentuate facial flaws. The best insurance is to bring along a few pictures and ask the professional for advice.

Your stylist should ask you a series of questions regarding the pictures, she/he should discuss with you front view, top, back and side views.  They should ask about what you find most appealing about the picture.  If you have several pictures you can select part from one and part from another, make sure the stylist understands what parts you feel are most appealing. Don’t be afraid to tell them what you like and what you do not want.   They should discuss with you Your hair and how it compares to the hair in the photo.

2.  Ask Questions.  With modern technology, any look is possible.  But, do you have the time, energy, and money to maintain this look?  Ask the stylist what is involved in achieving this look?  How much time will be invested, today for the service and to style it each day?  How easy will it be to style?  Is this something I can do at home?  How often will I need to come back to the salon to maintain this look? What products and tools will be needed?  And the biggest question….How much will it cost to achieve, and how much to maintain.

3.  Be realistic.  If you select a picture that is similar in length, texture and color to what you already have then it should be a very realistic look to achieve easily, however, if you select a total turn around, and go to very extreme style or color from what you already have, this may take a lot of time and effort to accomplish, and may even have to be done in a series of treatments.

4.  Consultation.  As I said earlier, ask questions.  Now is the time to really consult with your stylist. Communication is the key.  Make sure your stylist is listening to you and that you listen to her.  Once you feel that you that you and your stylist understand each other then you can begin the service. I always recommend a shampoo, style and finish with a style change. This ensures that the hair will work for the client when they get home.  As a Stylist, myself, when I style my client’s hair I can tell if it will style easily or if it may need some added help with a special product or support service to make their life a little easier when they get home.

5.  Styling Advice.  Watch as the stylist blow drys and styles your hair.  What products are they using?  What type of brush?  What size of curling iron?  Ask questions about this part of the service as it is performed and he/she will be happy to help you with professional insight on how to achieve this look at home.

6.  At Home Maintenance.  This is a big issue.  A lot of time clients feel that they cannot achieve the look when they get home.  There is a big difference in quality of hair products, tools, irons and even blow dryers.  Ask your stylist what they are using on you and why?  Most salons carry support products for at home use, it is to your advantage to use these if you truly want to duplicate the look.

7.  Pre-book your next appointment.  YES, this is important.  If you really want to keep your look, looking great, reschedule your maintenance appointment.  This saves you and your stylist precious time and frustration, your stylist can be ready for you with a plan in place, you can discuss the results of the last style, adjust it where needed and enjoy a most beautiful result.

What happens if I’m still not happy?

There are times when you’re just not happy with the cut. If you are aware of this before you leave the salon, make it known. If the salon is not busy, this may be able to be corrected then and there. If you feel rushed, tell the stylist and let him or her know that you may be in touch soon. If you discover that the haircut is not to your liking after you get home, make another appointment to follow up. After all, you wanted to look better, right? The best way to do this is communicate with the professional.

Remember, don’t ever get your hair cut right before a special event. You will need some time to get used to it and make any adjustments if it turns out bad. Professional stylists want to make you, the client, happy and communication is a two way street and it take both parties to communicate effectively.

Congratulations to Student of the Month, Heather Dilbeck, for outstanding performance as a Cosmetology Student at Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy!

Profile Picture

Heather, a recent Pauls Valley High School graduate, attending Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy just received the honor of being our Student of the Month, for June 2012.  Miss Dilbeck is a very outgoing and social person who loves making her clients feel special.  She always has a smile on her face and is ready to accept any challenge.

Heather is a joy to teach. She is always willing to work on her assignments and to help her fellow students with their assignments.  She enjoys people of all ages.  She will do very well in the business of Cosmetology due to her outgoing personality.  She is very bright and energetic, and is a lot of fun in class.

When I asked Heather about her cosmetology experience and her future plans, she stated, ” I like doing perms and I love being around people and helping them feel better about themselves.  I plan on going to work in Pauls Valley after graduation and working full time in a salon.  I see myself possibly owning my own establishment after a few years.  Come by and see me at the Academy”.

We wish Heather much success in her career.  She has what it takes to make a wonderful cosmetologist.
